(Commissioned on 9/15/1953) 1953: Jet Transiton Training at NAS Kingsville 1953 to 1955: Fighter Squadron 112 based at NAS Miramar flying F9F-6 “Cougars.” Deployed to WestPac on the USS Kearsarge (CVA 33). 1956-1958: ATU 205 at NAS Memphis. Advanced jet transition instructor flying the TV-2 (T-33). 1958: Navy Line School, Monterey, CA 1958-1960: USS Lexington: Hangar Deck Officer and Assistant Navigator. 1960: Fighter Squadron 121: F3H Demon transition training. 1960 to 1962: Fighter Squadron 193: Safety Officer and then Operations Officer in this F3H Demon Squadron based at NAS Miramar. Westpac cruise on the Bonne Homme Richard (CVA-31) 1963 to 1964: Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA 1964 to 1965: VT-24: Instructed in advanced jet transition, instruments and fighter tactics, flying the F9F-8T "Cougar," at NAS Beeville, Texas. 1965 to 1967: Naval Aviation Training and Operating Procedures Standardization (NATOPS) Officer on the staff of the Commander Naval Air Advanced Training. At NAS Corpus Christi, Texas. 1967 to 1968: Reconnaissance Attack Squadron Three (RVAH-3). RA-5C "Vigilante" transition training at Sanford, Florida. 1968 to 1970: Reconnaissance Attack Squadron Eleven (RVAH-11): Operations Officer, Executive Officer and Commanding Officer of this North American RA-5C squadron based at NAS Albany, Georgia. Two cruises to WestPac on the USS Kitty Hawk (CVA 63). Flew 100 Combat missions over North Vietnam. Awarded the Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal and 10 Air Medals. During that period the squadron was awarded a Presidential Unit Citation and a Navy Unit Commendation. During that period the Oriskany was awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation. 1972 to 1975: Staff of the Chief of Naval Material in Arlington, VA.: Director of the Advanced Vehicles Division under the Chief of Naval Development.
